Georg Baselitz

Born 1938 in Deutschbaselitz, Saxony, Germany

Lives and works in Basel (Switzerland), Lake Ammersee (Germany) and Imperia (Italy)
 

Painter, sculptor, printmaker and draughtsman, one of Germany's most celebrated living artists

famous for his figurative, emotional and expressive way of painting often using vivid colours.

Georg Baselitz has been the subject of numerous museum exhibitions including the Royal Academy of Arts, London (2007); Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville, Paris (2011); Städel-Museum, Frankfurt (2016); Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2016); Fondation Beyeler, Basel (2018) and Hirshhorn Museum, Washington (2018). In 2019, the Gallerie dell'Accademia, Venice, held a major retrospective exhibition - the first exhibition by a living artist at the museum.

In 2021/2022 the Centre Pompidou, Paris, hosted an extensive Baselitz exhibition entitled Georg Baselitz: The Retrospective, spanning six decades of the artist's long and distinguished career.
