Bob Law

Born 1934 in Brentford, England
Died 2004 in Penzance, England

Abstract painter and sculptor, Bob Law is considered one of the founding figures of British Minimalism.

Bob Law's artistic career started in the late 1950s when he moved to St. Ives. Inspired by the Cornish landscape, he created his first minimalist works, the so-called field paintings and drawings. These early works are characterised by a single outline drawn close to the edges of the canvas framing a blank or near-blank central field.

His vocabulary of elemental forms, traditional symbols and primary colours can be seen across his paintings, drawings and sculpture.

Bob Law has been the subject of important exhibitions including Whitechapel Gallery, London (1978); Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall (1999); and Kettle's Yard, Cambridge (1999). More recently, he was included in group shows, such as "A House of Leaves", DRAF, London (2013); "Abstract Drawing", Drawing Room, London (2014); and "Artists and Poets" at Secession, Vienna, Austria (2015).
