Arnulf Rainer

Born 1929 in Baden, Austria

Lives and works in Vienna, Bavaria and Tenerife

Austrian painter, photogapher and printmaker, regarded as a pioneer of Art Informel, often described as the European equivalent to Abstract Expressionism.

Although not officially a member, Arnulf Rainer is also often linked to the Viennese Actionists because of his performative approach to creating works of art, such as painting blindfolded or with his feet and hands, or painting under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs.

Arnulf Rainer is best known for his overpaintings. Throughout his career he has continually returned to drawing and painting over his own pictures and photographs, in particular his photographic self-portraits, as well as drawing over works by his contemporaries.
