Born 1939 in Dresden, Germany
Died 2017 in Zurich, Switzerland

German neo-expressionist artist, best known for his paintings and sculptures characterised by stick figures and primitive-style imagery, influenced by cave painting and African tribal art.

A.R. Penck has been the subject of numerous museum exhibitions, including the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford in 2019 which was the artist's first UK museum show in over thirty years. The year 2019 marked both the 80th anniversary of the artist's birth and the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and we were delighted to have been able to facilitate a loan to this timely exhibition. For further information, click here.

In 2020 the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, The Hague, Netherlands, held a major retrospective exhibition featuring almost two hundred works including paintings and drawings rarely shown before.
